memorial day w/e

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

I finally got the time to blog so I thought I’d post a weekend update. It was one crazy-busy weekend. On Friday night Mare and I went over to my friend Matty’s house to hang out with him and his son. Ty is getting _much_ bigger and is such a happy kid. He smiles nonstop! It was good to get caught up with Matty since I don’t get to see him as much now that he’s married and has a family!

On Saturday I spent the morning getting crap done…laundry, installed my air conditioner, did dishes, etc, etc, boring stuff. Mare’s best friend Autumn flew into town for the weekend so we went out to eat and spent the afternoon lounging around outside. Autumn’s brother also came to visit. He drove all the way from Williston, ND to pick up Autumn and take her home to S.D. It was Jason’s 21st bday and he said he wanted to eat a big steak so we went to Ruth Chris steakhouse. I’d never been there but I had heard it was a fancy restaurant. Fancy it was! I had a _really_ hard time paying $37 for a steak but DAAAAAANG it was one DARN good steak! Then we went to Gastoph’s (sp?) and finished off the night.

Sunday we went to the pool at Mare’s place and took it easy. Then Jeremy (a Digi coworker) stopped over and we nerded out. He’s thinking of getting a macbook pro and it didn’t take much convincing after he saw how awesome this powerbook is ;) We grabbed some grub and cruised around the lakes in his convertable. It was cool to see him again and we had fun. Then mare and I went to the DaVinci Code. It was ok but it was long and there were some really lame remarks that gave me “lameness shivers” as Pedxing would say.

Monday was another busy day. We cooked up a mean breakfast (a pound of the best bacon ever from the co-op and some scrambled eggs) then rode bike down to Lake Calhoun. We rented a canoe for an hour and cruised around Calhoun, Lake of the Isles, and Cedar Lake. It was really cool to be “out in nature” in the heart of Minneapolis! There were people EVERYWHERE grilling, playing volleyball, frisbee, swimming, sunning, etc. I got a little burnt but it was worth it. Then we rode our bikes home. Mare was having a hard time keeping up on the bike and I _really_ wanted to give her crap about being so slow. When we got home she started brining her bike inside and we noticed that the front tire wasn’t spinning. Something was screwed up with her brake and it was totally locked. It’s a weird disc-brake and I almost burned myself when I touched it. hahaha, it’s no wonder she was struggling! Then we met up with my sis in Roseville for dinner.

My friend Alex and his wife had a baby boy on Monday so that was great news. They’re super excited, naturally.

The rest of the week has been busy too. I played kickball last night. Both teams were short on players (I was the only guy on my team and I’m not even technically a team member!) so the team before us filled out our roster. It was a blast! I’m not a great player but I do know how to run bases so I just ran around like a crazy person. I got to slide a couple of times and some of the guys started calling me the Matrix…possibly because I had my “I took the green pill” tshirt on ;) hehehe.

Today I worked late, went to a planning meeting for an open source conference/event (Open.Minnebar), then hit the gym. I’ve been slacking a lot on my training lately so it was good to work out hard. Did 12.5mi on the bike and ran 2.5mi.

The rest of the week is going to be nuts too. I’m working on getting our codebase ready for deployment in a hosted environment. We have a BIG deal with a local ISP that should generate some significant revenue. It’s been really fun to work on since I’m no bash wizard and I’ve been able to learn a ton. Oh, and I have to say….OpenVZ (os virtualization) is freakin COOL! It’s made testing my installer script sooo much easier! My stuff needs to be done by Monday so I’ve got a long week ahead of me. I’m not dreading it though since it’s sooo much fun.

This weekend should be a good time too. I’m hanging out with T & S on Saturday. I haven’t seen them in what seems like an eternity. They’ve decided to move back to Fargo at the end of the summer so I NEED to maximize my time with them. I’m really bummed that they’re moving but I completely understand and Fargo will be nice for them in so many ways. We had sooo much fun this last 12+ months and it’ll be sad to see them go. On the upside, it gives me another good excuse to make it back to Fargo! I haven’t been there in a long time and I miss the old crew! so many good times in Fargo!

alright, enough sappy nonsense…time to sleep! working from home tomorrow. sweeeeet :)

got me a powerbook!!!

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

So before I took this new job, I had asked if I could get a decent laptop to work on. I wanted one of those sexy dual core intel PowerBook’s but even the co-founder of the company didn’t have one so obviously that wasn’t going to fly ;) So Steve bought a new PB and gave me his old one.

I have to say…I absolutely LOVE this machine. The screen is magnificient, it has 2GB RAM, and it’s just an all around great machine.

On a related note, I’m _really_ diggin’ this job. It’s constantly busy but we really do have a great product and everyone in the organization is wicked talented. It’s so much fun being able to learn from smart people!

Boundary Waters Hiking Trip

Sunday, May 21st, 2006

I just got back into town after an absolutely amazing trip to the boundary waters. I’m pretty exhausted so I’m not going to write much tonight. I snapped a few photos and will get them up on a gallery and post a more detailed trip report soon. All I have to say tonight is that it’s great to have a comfy chair to sit in, hot water to bath in, comfy shoes to put my blister-covered feet in, and a comfortable bed to sleep in! It was such an amazing experience that words can’t even come close to describing it! Wow!

UPDATE:
Here are the pics I took

Here are the pics Gus took

Gus also took a bunch so I’ll get them up in the gallery at some point..

SPAM BOT ATTACK!!

Sunday, May 21st, 2006

Wheatstaw’s blog has entered a new era of random spamming this week clocking in at over 600 spam comments in the last 2 days alone. between the time that I went to sleep last night and 9am this morning he received 93. The bots are out of control. If anyone needed any sort of proof that the robots are taking over the world, this is it.

hide your children, say goodbye to your pets, and remember to take plenty of disposable cameras with you… it may be your only hope.

weekend

Sunday, May 14th, 2006

what a great weekend! On friday I went over to REI to buy some gear for my trip to the boundary waters this week. I picked up some boots, a raincoat, some pants and tried to get a pack. It was so busy there and I couldn’t find ANYONE to help me size a pack so I decided to leave (and go back on Saturday :( ). I waited in line 30 minutes and finally got out of that crazy place. Mare and I hung out afterwards and had a good lazy night. Saturday morning I went back to REI to get the rest of my gear. After waaay too long in that store (again) I finally got a pack. Then I chatted with Mr. M for a bit and he bought me a ticket out to visit this summer!!! sweet!!! We’re going hiking in the cascade’s in august and I’m sooo pumped to visit!

Around 2:30pm I hopped on my bike to ride over to Gus’ for a “practice hike”. It was a crappy 6.5 mile ride in hard rain with a stomach ache. Then we walked over to Minnehaha Falls and went for a nice 2.5 hour hike. It was really beautiful down there along the river. The Ford Plant is right across the river (in St. Paul) and there’s a huge damn (generating power) there. The sediment along the river is sandstone so there are all kinds of crazy carvings in the “rock”. Apparently, a lot of mining was done there to provide sand for the Ford glass plant. Anyway, it was an awesome place to hike.

Here are some pictures.

There was one really cool spot where someone had carved a cave about 20 feet up and dug “steps” into the sandstone up to the place. It had some crazy symbology carved into it (a lot of anarchist signs, pentagrams, etc). I climbed up part way but got a little paranoid because the sandstone wasn’t very strong! It was cool though.

After finishing the hike at the waterfall (very cool :) ) we walked back to Gus’ and I rode another 6.5 miles home (in the rain again…thank goodness for some nice rain gear!). Then I went over to mare’s, did a load of laundry, and just chilled for the night.

This morning I went to church with mare, to perkin’s to eat, called my ma for ma’s day, took a short nap, swam 60 lengths in the pool, bought a bunch of dehydrated food, granola bars, gatorade powder, etc for the trip this week, watched a move and went home. hehee, what a great day!

I’m so freakin’ excited for our hiking trip this week. We’re meeting up at Aaron’s at 7am thursday morning and beginning our adventure. We’re driving to Ely, MN and taking the Echo Trail for a nice 24 mile hike. It’s going to be so great to be out in the woods completely out of touch with the “real world”. :) I’ll be coming home Sunday night (probably extremely tired…hehe)

Oh, I chattend with Mitchem a bit tonight. He’s on a crazy trip to Calgary for a photo shoot. hahahah, oh man, it cracks me up soooo much to think of mitch hanging out with the people he’s with. lol. i WISH i was a fly on the wall on that trip!

Now it’s time for some sleep. Work always comes early in the morning. I have to say though…I’m really excited for work every day (so far). I’m really loving my new job and I’ve been learning so much! Best of all…it’ll be a nice short 3-day week!

kickball

Wednesday, May 10th, 2006

so Mare is playing in a kickball league this spring. I really wanted to play but couldn’t commit to it since I was in Alec when it started. They played last night so I rode my bike over to watch. As it turns out, they were short on guys and needed me to play.

It was so much fun. Of course, the competitive side of me came out and within one inning I had a giant grass stain on my back and a nice cherry on my shin and ankle from sliding into second. Hehehe, note to self…don’t slide when you’re wearing shorts dummy! We got our butts kicked but it was still a blast. :)

MinneBar tomorrow

Saturday, May 6th, 2006

I’m headed to the MinneBar conference tomorrow. I got an email from Aaron tonight about possibly getting a range extender antenna. hehehe, I’m gonna bring the ol’ 10dB outdoor omni from the wicked setup in Fargo to the conference…that should sufficiently permeate the building ;) Unfortunately, I don’t have a wireless G AP. Isn’t that sad? I’ve purchased 3 of those. I think two of them stayed in fargo (and i certainly do NOT expect them back guys!) and mine I left at the old job after I left. Man…WHY didn’t I take that back before I left…oh well…I’ll get it sometime. I’ve got an old B router that I’ll have to bring I guess…I’m too lazy to stop somewhere and buy a G router. I’m biking to the conference anyway so I’m not spending any more cash.

alright, time for some sleep. It was so great to be home this week. I was able to do so many fun things. Screw traveling! I love minneapolis (and all that comes with it) too much to be away all week!

Oh one more unrelated thing…Today at lunch I visited the Sibley Bike Depot (finally!). I’m really only 3 blocks from it but I hadn’t run across it in my lunch travels yet. It was different than I expected but still a cool place. There was bike gear EVERYWHERE. I asked if they sold any used roadbikes. They had an old 10 speed for $125.00 that they had just tuned up. It was the best that they had. They let me take it for a ride with nothing more than an “I trust you. Take it out for a few mintues.” I’m really not convinced that the bike is that much better than my mtn bike but for $125.00 I might just buy it so I have something to ride for the triathlon. Anyways, it was cool to see the shop and I’d really like to start spending some time there learning how to fix up bikes!

acme comedy club

Saturday, May 6th, 2006

I went to Acme comedy club with Mare tonight. It was pretty darn good. It was only $15 and we got seats right up front. There were three comedians…the first guy (and MC for the night) was really funny. He spoke in a monotone voice and did a ton of one-liners, never once looking directly at the audience.

“When my anorexic friends come over, I like to mess with them. When they’re standing on the scale, I like to put my big toe on it. (pause)…Looks like you’ve got some work to do. (pause)….chubby”

“When I have dinner parties I like to mess with my bulemic friends. I like to lay out a good spread of food. (pause) Then I lock the bathroom door. (pause)…then I ask ‘Who wants desert?’. Then I tell them the key to the bathroom is in one of the pieces of cake”

hehehe, mean jokes but really funny too.

The second guy was entertaining but not _that_ funny.

The third guy was the best. He had so many great family jokes/stories and delt with a heckler in the crowd fantastically! There was a black guy in the crowd who kept saying things which harldy anyone could understand…in fact the second comedian joked about him uttering incomprehensible sounds…shortly after, then man was told by the staff to be quiet or leave. Anyway, this man kept up his annoyances and the thrid comedian went right at him. He asked him a question: “Do you believe there’s still racism in America?” The heckler mumbled something about “we’re all created equal”…good response…the comedian then went on to tell all kinds of jokes playing off stereotypes. In all honesty, the jokes probably would have been average if i’d seen them on TV for instance, but the fact that the show was live made the comedy so enjoyable. At the end of the show the comedian gave his CD to the heckler after a grand finale amplified by the interaction with the weirdo in the crowd.

After the show mare and I hit up the tower for some ‘za. mmm…garlic cheese bread and pizza :)

sick

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006

Why isn’t the human body immune to colds during the spring and summer months. Seriously, it was absolutely beautiful outside today and I was stuck inside all day with a nose that won’t stop spewing snot out of it….NOT cool! Thankfully, I could work from home. I’m so excited about my new job. I _know_ this will be a huge opportunity for me to advance my linux and mono skills. I can’t wait to get my powerbook too! sweeeeet :)

new job

Monday, May 1st, 2006

I started the new job today. All I have to say is darn it’s cool to work at a company where one of the steps to “getting setup” involves installing x-chat and logging into IRC :) :)
