Well, I’m thoroughly enjoying my short vacation. I’ve finally had a chance to catch up on some things that have been neglected for a long time. Yesterday I fixed up a friend’s computer, did 4 loads of laundry, shredded enough darn credit card offers (and other junk mail) to FILL two kitchen garbage bags, and did my final expense report. Then Gus stopped over and we did a nice 16.5 mi bike ride. It was beautiful outside yesterday and we rode around 7pm so it was _perfect_ riding conditions. I felt like I could have done another 15 it was so nice! Then we hit up the tower for some pizza and beer. hehehe, it’s fun to work out and then eat like a pig. ;)

This morning I had my exit intervew at Digi. It went really well and I was able to leave on good terms with everyone. It was nice to be able to openly express a few of my frustrations with Digi as well. Mare caught an early flight home from Chi-town so I stopped over at her house afterwards and we hung out for a bit. Then we hit the gym and I ran 7.5mi which is a record for me. This is probably too much information, but dang, my nipples hurt something fierce! hehehehe

Tonight we’re headed up to see Matty and Tyler and T & S. Then tomorrow it’s off to the good ol’ iron range to visit mare’s parents. I’ve only been up in that neck of the woods one or two times for summer baseball so it’ll be fun to visit that area again.

All in all, it’s been a wonderful vacation!

guess what I have to do today?

NOTHING!!!!!

I have the day off, the sun is shining, the birds are chirping and oh yeah…I have the day off! Since I’m switching jobs, I have the rest of the week off. I had a hectic day yesterday finishing up stuff at work then left Alexandria for good. No more Holiday Inn for me!

I spent the morning screwing around with my computer (and fixing Gus’s) then I’m headed up for a late lunch with my sis and a stop by Erik’s bike shop to look for a road bike for the triathalon. I might also visit the Sibley Bike Depot in St. Paul to see if they have anything used for sale. I’m a member there and I’m excited to get involved at the shop. On Wed nights they have a volunteer night where you can learn about fixing up bikes and help out too. I’m thinking I’ll go into the office on Wednesday’s (which happens to be just a few blocks away from the bike shop) and try to learn/volunteer a bit. It should be a lot of fun.

Tomorrow Gus and Christy are coming over with Gus’s new $1200 bike and we’re gonna get a nice 10-12mi bike in and a 2-3mi run. Then T & S are supposedly coming down to the Tower for some pizza :)

Mare is headed to Chicago on Thursday morning for a quick business trip but will be home for the weekend. Then we’re cruising up to the iron range to her folks place. It should be a fun weekend and I’m excited to take my bike out on the trails near Giant’s Ridge (Mare’s parents live a few miles from Giant’s Ridge). If the weather’s nice it’ll be a very beautiful ride.

I start my new job on Monday! I’m really, really excited about it. I know I’m going to learn a ton and it’ll be great to be in the metro full time. Oh yeah…and I’m getting a PowerBook! I had hoped for one of the new dual-core intel’s but I’ll settle for a year old 1.67Ghz G4 with 2GB of ram running tiger!

If I have some extra time today, I’m gonna spend some times with RAGI (ruby asterisk gateway). I played with it for a few nights last week and it was pretty slick. I’m thinking of putting something together that I can show at MinneBar on May 6th…ahhh…it’s great to be home!

Q-O-T-D: quote of the day

jumpin ship again

Wednesday, April 12th, 2006

Well, it looks as if my career in .NET consulting lasted all of 5 months. I accepted a new job on Monday. I feel really bad leaving a company after such a short amount of time, but the new job is right up my alley and I’m excited for it.

I’ll be getting to do some network/server architecture and design work, sys admin stuff, and C# (mono) development. Best of all, the new job is in St. Paul and I can work from home so more more driving to Alec twice a week!

It’s funny how the timing of this worked out. I was definitely NOT seeking out a new job but it came along at just the right time…the project i’m currently working on is winding down (code complete 4/24) so the transition should be perfect.

In the wise words of o2×7, “you better stay at this one a while”. hehehehe, yep. :)

death and taxes

Monday, April 10th, 2006

man i hate taxes. As usual, I’ve procrastinated long enough and am stuck in the battle of doing them myself (so i don’t have to pay anyone…and partly because i want to be rebellious and be one of those paper-file jackasses) and doing them online (which is much less hassle).

as of now, the latter method is winning out…yeah, i’m lazy….

corporate nonsense

sheesh, I just got a meeting request titled “Data/Development Attitude Survey” which was sent from someone with a title of “Team Relations Administrative Specialist”. I need to get out of here…what more can I say!?

first ride of spring

Wednesday, April 5th, 2006

Since it was so beautiful outside today (and I was home!) I took the bike out for a ride. It’s awesome living so close to nice trails. I went for a nice 45 minute ride along the greenway west to haiwatha, then north up through the warehouse district, and finally back south through downtown. I love that route. It’s pretty short, has good trails, and ends with a cruise through the downtown traffic…which I LOVE.

One thing though…I NEED to buy a used roadbike so I can start getting used to that (for the triathalon-thing). It’s so demoralizing pedaling as hard as I can only to be passed by some dude on a roadbike who appears to be expending absolutely no energy…pisses me right off!

After biking I went to the mall of america with Mare. I needed to stop at the apple store and buy a toy. I haven’t bought any geek toys forever so I bought a nano (since my ipod is dead…yet again…this time without a warranty). We ate at an italian place there. The food was ok but left my stomach not feeling so well. so what do we do??? go on a crazy roller-coaster ride, of course! I thought it would be a nice leasurely ride but was actually really jagged and somewhat scary. The cars spun in a circle throughout the ride and both of us thought we might lose our supper for a brief moment. I hate the mall but Mare is a good shopper (in other words, she doesn’t like shopping) so the mall wasn’t too bad :)

I got an offer for that job that I interviewed for last week. I’m SERIOUSLY considering it but haven’t made up my mind yet. There are many good reasons to take it. The work would be a really great mix of sys-admin, network architecture, and .NET (using mono) development work. My first project would basically be to build a management system for linux appliances that are deployed at customer sites. The job is also in the metro area and I could work from home as much as I wanted (though I want to go in to the office at least 2 times a week). The office is in downtown St. Paul so that would be kinda cool too. The only downsides that I can see is it would be a fairly significant pay cut (though the compensation package includes options which could be nice later), and I’d feel strange leaving a company after being there less than 6 months. In my defense, my current employer has DEFINITELY made up any cost overhead in hiring me and though I’ve been treated fairly well, I’m still a bit bitter about being misled (at the very least!) about the amount of time I’d spend away from mpls. I’m still mulling it over, I guess and will make a decision fairly soon.

well, time to get some sleep…have to drive to alec tomorrow and I’m NOT looking foward to it.

bored in a hotel room

Monday, April 3rd, 2006

just sitting here bored…listening to Clap your hands say yeah. What a freakin’ brilliant album. I really dig it! For some reason I feel it necessary to listen at 100% volume level.

ahhh…it’s good to sit and be lazy. I had another good but fast weekend. On Saturday morning i hit up the gym and decided to see if I could jog for an hour. I ended up running 6.68 miles which is probably a record for me. 60 minutes of jogging is a long time but it was fun in a screwed up way. Went bowling with M & T & S on sat night. S tried to play an april fool’s joke on me by saying she was preggo. She would have totally gotten me too but M didn’t fall for the joke and I overheard the women scheming to get me so I didn’t fall for it ;)

Sunday morning I went to church, then to the ghetto Perkin’s with M, watched a part of The Office, took a nice nap, went to the gym with Gus and rode bike for 35 minutes (while watching happy gilmore…crazy workout bikes with TV’s in them! seriously!? what a bunch of lazy americans), ran a mile and a half, then hung out with M while she helped me do laundry (and paid for it…hehe, she’s a good woman), finally went home and grabbed some new music.

It was a pretty darn good weekend :)

time to ride

Monday, April 3rd, 2006

It’s springtime and sunny and i have an insatiable urge to ride my bike. Too bad I’m in alec…soon!
