It’s been a while…

The Christmas holiday was a good one. On Thursday night, I left work a bit early and drove up to Warren to catch one of Dave’s bball games. I didn’t get out of work when I wanted to so I missed the first half. It was a fun second half though but unfortunately, the boys lost by 3. The whole fam made it over to Warren for the game so it was a lot of fun. On Friday morning, Dave and I went up to Lake of the Woods to do some fishing. It had rained the previous night so the road from Williams to Long Point was completely glazed ice. hehehe, it was kind of an adventure, but we made it. Dave’s friend brought a fishing house and all the equipment. James brought a little portable stove so we cooked bacon, eggs, and toast out on the ice. mmm…it was a DARN good meal. The fishing wasn’t so good but we each caught one small walleye. At the end of the day, we started packing up and Dave was messing around and filled up one of the holes with snow. I remember thinking to myself “I’ll have to be careful not to step in there”. Well, sure enough, as I was wrapping up one of the lines, I took a step and ended up thigh-deep in the hole. hahahaha, it was SOOOO funny. I couldn’t stop laughing…until my foot went numb, of course. I guess it was just more of a surprise than anything. It was one of those slow-motion “what is HAPPENING!?” moments ;)

Friday night the family went out to eat and had a good time laughing and joking around. Saturday I slept in, visited my former neighbor (my “other grandma”). Then we ate dinner, opened presents, and headed over to my aunts house for Christmas with the rest of my dad’s family.

Sunday we went to church, then ate another massive lunch…mmm…I love home-cooked meals…especially since I’ve been eating out 100% of the time with the new job. After dinner I took off for mpls. I stopped in Erskin and had a great time visiting Mr. M, Paula, and both of their parents. It was _fantastic_ to see them all again. It’s just unfortunate that I could only stay for an hour. After a nice visit I continued my journey home. I finally got to mpls around 8:30 (hehehe, excessive speeding is really fun :) ). I hung out with mare and we watched Old School. We got up early this morning and headed out to Afton Alps to go skiing. It was a BLAST to be outside on such a beautiful day and the skiing was fun. My last time skiing/snowboarding was at Red Lodge in Montana and Afton Alps didn’t hold a candle, but it was still a lot of fun. ahhh…i love the “beat up” feeling. The inevitable soreness tomorrow will be nice :)

We’re going out to the Tower for some ‘za tonight then it’s back to Alex tomorrow. [cough, cough…] maybe I’m coming down with something. hehehehe, ok, I guess I should go tomorrow. I’m just not motivated to go back to work. Thank goodness it’s another short week…then another whirlwind weekend.

Life is good…as are friends and family!

another week away from home

Monday, December 19th, 2005

well, i’m back in alec for another week. This weekend flew by as usual. I watched a movie with M on friday night. Sat we drove to Rogers to buy a gift card for my bro. It was kinda funny because i tried to stop at Cabella’s on the drive home friday night but was unable to find it. Seriously, it’s this GIGANTIC place that you can’t miss but i was completely unable to find it and finally just got ticked and drove home instead. So anyway, we went back on Sat. That place was a freakin’ ZOO!!! No really…there were animals everywhere (though they were stuffed). Unfortunately there were also _people_ everywhere. It took longer to get from the parking lot back out to 94 as it did to drive from M’s place to Rogers. Then I got the rest of my chrismtas shoppping done (in a hurry) and we stopped by matty and Elizabeth’s place. It was so cool to see little Tyler again. I’m just utterly amazed by watching that little guy. We all watched a movie and ate pizza…ah…good to see friends again.

On sunday i went to church, watched the vikes, slept for 2.5hrs, did laundry, packed my bags, went to Old Chicago with M, and finally S & T stopped by and we all watched FG. Sheesh…weekends are WAY too busy lately. I’m so glad to have 3 weeks in a row with a 4 day work week.

After the new year, I NEED to get out of this 5-day-a-week nonsense! At least work has been better the last few days. I’ve managed to get myself out of crappy UI work and into some more important/fun tasks. It’s been cool to be in some dev discussions/arguments. I guess I just enjoy building stuff again. However, I do hope this week goes by fast…I won’t see M until Sunday/Monday but we might go skiing/snowboarding that day which would be fan-freakin-tastic. I can’t wait to spend some time outside this winter. Broomball season is near!

Oh, one more thing…I talked to jester today and he broke his ankle in two places on thursday. He had surgery Friday and is in rough shape. Hopefully he heals well and can make it through the pain…

peace

note to self

spend some more time with the Yahooo API’s and learning how to leverage the JSON output. What a fantastic way to make web services easily consumable from a browser using JavaScript!

thanks to Read/Write Web for bringing it to my attention. What a great blog R/W web is!

auto post del.icio.us links

Friday, December 16th, 2005

Since I’m actually quite busy working these days, my posts have slowed (as Mr. M. mentioned ;) ).

To remedy this fact, I’ve decided to auto-post my del.icio.us links. All I had to do was fill out a form over at del.icio.us and it uses xmlrpc to post to my wordpress blog. Pretty cool stuff!

Oh, did I mention that I can’t WAIT for the weekend! I’ve got absolutely nothing planned (except for spending time with mare) this weekend so I’m happy!

who’s bright idea was it to take a job 2 hours away!?!?

finally friday

Friday, December 9th, 2005

…it’s about time. I’m glad the week is nearly over. T - 8 hours and counting…then I’ll be home!

This week has been pretty boring at work. The project I’m on is somewhat disorganized and they’ve had a hard time finding work for me. I spent most of this week doing UI work (adding styles, tables, etc…yuk)! It’s mind-numbingly boring! Hopefully I’ll get assigned something more challenging soon!

This weekend should be fun. Spending time with friends tonight. A wedding with Mare on Saturday then hopefullly a quick stop by the company Christmas party. I might see Narnia on Sunday…then on to another week….

alright, time to work. Have a good w/e!

hehe, this if statement made me chuckle. It makes sense to convert Enums to strings to test for equality right!? lol

if ((webContext.Mode.ToString() == WebAuthorContextMode.AuthoringNew.ToString()) ||
(webContext.Mode.ToString() == WebAuthorContextMode.AuthoringReedit.ToString()))

i wish i was cooler

so yeah…this blog sucks as of late. I haven’t done any cool nerd stuff for what seems like a really long time. I guess it has something to do with being gone all week and only have 2 days to hang out with friends. Oh well…I can’t complain.

This weekend was fun but went by WAY too quickly. I went to a comedy show with Mare on Friday night, over to Alex’s for a poker tourney on Saturday (where I lost $10…which was completely worth it for the fun that was had), worked at church this morning then went out to eat and shopping with my aunt. ugh, i _despise_ shopping! It was a good exercise to teach me to be patient and she bought me a nice watercolor painting for my apartment as well as some dress clothes for work (as a bday/christmas gift). Then I dropped her off at my sis’ house and hung out with her and her friends for a little bit. Did some laundry tonight, packed my suitcase, watched a Family Guy rerun, and finished off the night with some more fun ;) heheheh, fun :)

Oh man, I just remembered that I _need_ to write about the argument I was forced into on Saturday night with the crazy (and i mean _literally_ crazy) old lady that lives in the basement. My favorite part of the conversation went something like:

Crazy Lady: “Are you familiar with the concept of cold air sinking?”
Me: “Uhm…yeah, I understand that”
CL: “They’re not stupid! They know what’s going on!”
Me: “Who are you talking about?”
CL: “Is there some kind of malice going on here?”
Me: “What?”
CL: “Is there some malice going on here?’
Me: “I’m not sure what you’re talking about…there’s certainly no deliberate malice towards you!” — still not sure what she’s implying but I’d guess that it has something to do with the vast conspiracy within the apartment building against the basement tenents.

hahaha, there’s so much more to write about but I wanted to get something down to remind me to tell the whole story! Alright, enough rambling. Time for sleep. 5am is gonna come too early tomorrow.

One more thing, bader, if you read this, let me know if you’re around Tuesday or Wed night. I’m 90% sure I’ll be making a trip over one of those nights. Hotels are lame.

R-O-T-D: people who don’t listen

Friday, December 2nd, 2005

I haven’t ranted in a while so here’s a quick one…

One of my biggest pet peeves is when I ask someone a question that requires a good deal of thought and analysis and they respond with a two sentence email! AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!

I had a discussion with some coworkers about localization. The codebase I’m working on isn’t consistent at all. For example, all page titles are loaded from the ResourceManager (through resx files). However, all other content is written directly on the .aspx page. My feeling is if you’re gonna localize _anything_ you need to localize _everything_ (as least as far as strings go)! So I talk to a few devs and we decide it’ll be a good topic to bring up in our team meeting. The topic came up again today so I sent an email to one of the “good devs” and said “I’m interested to hear your opinion on monday” hoping he’d think it through and weigh the pros/cons. Instead, I get a reply within about 30 seconds! frick!
