I must be completely out of the loop because I had no idea Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story! was even in the works! I watched it last night and it’s absolutely hilarious. I’d highly recommend checking it out…

Minneapolis “Stop On Red” Google Map

Wednesday, July 27th, 2005

Minneapolis recently installed cameras at several intersections which take pictures of red-light runners and automatically sends them a ticket. I decided to create a Gmap with the locations…check it out

Mr. M’s coming to town

Tuesday, July 26th, 2005

I booked the flight last night so Mr. M. is officially coming to town Sept 8-11th! yay! If anyone has some good ideas about what to do that weekend, please mention them.

On a side note, I just realized this morning that that weekend is Harvest Festival! :( It’s going to be a bummer to miss the Wookies, All Mighty Senators, and Arrested Development, but it’s for the best. Three days of camping with little sleep wears a guy out and having M. in town will more than make up for missing a concert!

more gmaps fun

Monday, July 25th, 2005

I finally got some time to play with Gmaps a bit more today. I have to say, that API is freakin’ clean and extremely simple to use. Google will soon rule the world if they continue to release such functional and straight-forward APIs. Here’s a map of some data I’ve been playing with for work. The map is best viewed in Firefox and be patient as there are 361 data points being loaded…lots of XML parsing.

http://flyhouse.homelinux.org/~perickson/gmaps/api/demo.html

You’ll probably get denied access if you attempt to click on the Name href…this is linking to an internal page at work which contains additional customer data.

I’d like to add a few more features:
* info panel (like google local)…need to create a nice xslt
* narrowing points to display by proximity (zip code, for example) - might take some work, but it’s possible
* drop down for additional maps based on other captured data.

Wal-mart singles

Sunday, July 24th, 2005

Quick! Does anyone have a sharp object that I can put through my eye!? So I happened to be watching Fox news tonight…mostly because it was already buffered on the tivo after FG and american dad and partially because the “we’ll scare the crap out of you” news stories make me laugh.

One of the stories tonight was about “Wal-Mart singles night” in roanoke, virginia. Supposedly, “singles” enter the gates of hell and tie a red ribbon on their cart to signify that they’re “available”. Wal-fart also sets up “flirting areas” where people can mingle. hahahahahahah, I’m not even kidding. I can’t stop laughing about it. According to fox, Wal-fart’s American owners didn’t like the idea (it originally started in Germany) and decided to shut it down. hahahahahah, yet another reason to NEVER EVER EVER visit that screaming-child, meth-head, white trash filled POS store. Un-freakin-believable!

Lookin’ for a cheap date? Try Wal-Mart

biking adventures

Sunday, July 24th, 2005

so yesterday, I went out for a ride to scope out some new trails. While looking for one of the trails I’d seen on a map, I somehow got lost and ended up in the ghetto. It was was strange…there’s this one street on the west side of downtown in an industrial area (near 94) where there were people just lined up on the street drinking 40’s, listening to music (from their vehicle stereos) and just hanging out. It didn’t seem like the safest place in the world so I pedaled through rather quickly ;) I continued to ride until I was completely lost. Then, as luck would have it, I stumbled upon the trail. Most of the bike trails here follow railroad tracks but it’s always hard to find the entrance to the trail! I finally found a “shortcut” and got on. I ended up riding 35 miles (it’s fun to have a GPS :) ).

After riding, I headed over to my sister’s friends house for a party. I was a little nervous about going since I’m really not good friends with any of the guys who live there, but I had nothing else to do so I gave it a shot. It turned out to be pretty fun. The Red stripe I brought was a hit (not sure why…everyone kept metioning a really funny commercial for it on TV…guess I’m out of the loop without cable). I ran into a girl that I met the first week of school at bethel who later transferred to MSU. Of course, I didn’t recognize her face, but her voice sounded familiar…then she said her name and I remembered her. Our conversation went something like this:

P: “didn’t you go to bethel for a year?”
A: “Yep, I did”
P: “is it also possible that you went to NDSU or MSU?”
A: (confused/scared/apprehensive) “yeeeesss…you’re good!”
P: (notices apprehensiveness, tries to make it worse…hehehe) “that’s what I thought”
A: “How did you know that?”
P: “I have my ways”

I finally ended up explaining myself so as to not look like a total creep. I explained that I was a fairly forgettable character so that’s probably why she didn’t rememeber me. Anyway, it was a really funny conversation and her friend who she was with just looked at me like I was crazy. We ended up chatting a bit more and it made the night more fun…too bad she’s married.

Today, I went to church and took a nice long nap. Then I decided to go for a shorter bike ride over to St. Paul. I was hoping to go about 10 miles but ended up feeling pretty good so I kept on going. I road along east river parkway on the east side of the mississippi, then returning on the west side, through downtown and back to the greenway trail. I rode that WAY west past St. Louis park until my legs started to cramp up pretty bad. I had another 7 miles or so home so I decided to turn around. I made it back just fine but I’m hurtin now. The entire trip ended up being 31 miles with an average speed of 15.2 mph. I’m going to be dead tomorrow. anyway, time to watch the family guy.

Linksys WRT54G MTU problems

Friday, July 22nd, 2005

This has been a crazy week. On Wed, our employees from our remote office started complaining about not being able to send email attachments through our mail server. I tried nearly everything I could think of but kept getting postfix errors:

“timeout after DATA from xxxxx”

After beating my head against the wall, I ran across the Postfix FAQ which attributed the cause to a MTU issue. I tried a few workarounds they mentioned to no avail. No one else in the building was experiencing a problem with email and I could send email through our server from home just fine. After enumerating all my options and failing, I finally decided to upgrade to the latest linksys firmware (v3.1_4.00.7_US). I walked a coworker through the upgrade over the phone and the firmware was upgraded successfully. Yeah, at least it didn’t bork, I thought, but guess what? We get an IP through DHCP but the router isn’t sending any packets out the WAN interface…just great, freakin’ great. Luckily, after several reboots, and a changing to a static WAP IP the router started working again. We tested sending some large attachments and sure enough, everything works slick now.

I’m a fan of linksys but this kind of crap really pisses a guy off. I essentially wasted two days trying to solve this stupid thing and since I don’t have access to the firewall in the building and can’t drive 5 hours each way, I had to do it all over the phone. really, really, frustrating! Thankfully, we’re up and running now and I can go home happy today :)
