why is it everytime i think i have a good idea, someone has already taken it!?

Thursday, March 31st, 2005

with all the hullabaloo these days about social networking, and my fondness for Google maps, I thought I had a good idea….

someone should create a site where “normal users” could create custom google maps to share with friends. I envisioned a simple web interface where someone could input addresses (or Lat/Long data) and have a custom map created which could be easily shared with friends. There could be all kinds of fun uses for stuff like this…convention maps, favorite hipster hangouts, flash mobs, pub crawls, and my personal favorite: map of registered sex offenders in the neighborhood.

As it turns out, someone already beat me to the idea…I still have something in my back pocket, but these guys are way ahead…

gmaps is fun

Wednesday, March 30th, 2005

I’ve spent some time in the last few days working with Google maps. My company just did a market research study (survey) and I’ve been working on mapping out the data in gmaps. I don’t know exactly how much value this will add, but it’s already been interesting to see a visual representation of the areas we covered. Up to this point, I’ve simply been creating my own XML files but my next task will be to create a custom XSL that will render waypoints differently…the combination of JavaScript/XML/XSL gives devs a ton of flexibility.

I’m headed up north to Bemidji today…should be a fun time. My sis and I are driving up to see my bro. My grandparents, aunt, and other brother are driving down on Sunday. It’ll be good to see everyone again. Well, I’m off…have a good Easter weekend all.

the Onion: big lebowski

Friday, March 25th, 2005

just read this in the onion…thought it was funny.

“Every Time Area Man Drops By, Friend Is Watching The Big Lebowski”

No matter what time of day he stops by for a visit, Barry Jensen always catches friend Scott Dupre watching the film The Big Lebowski. “[Scott] has about 40 movies on his shelf, so I don’t know why he needs to watch The Big Lebowski over and over,” Jensen told reporters Monday. “I don’t know if he’s just too lazy to change the DVD or if he’s trying to memorize the lines, or what.” Jensen estimated that, in visiting Dupre, he has walked in on the bowling dream sequence with that Kenny Rogers song six times.

portable firefox rules

Thursday, March 24th, 2005

After seeing a slaskdot post about available thumbware, I put portable firefox, portable thunderbird, and trillian anywhere on my pendrive. Now I can hide in the serverroom at work and IM, check my email, and browse the web without leaving a trace behind me.

I guess the next step is putting a portable linux distro on it so I can really be seen as an outsider

hacky sack just saved me $400

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2005

all you posers better stop frontin’ and callin’ hacky-sack a waste of time! My mad skillz just saved me from buying a new iPod. While attempting a car to jacket-pocket transfer, i dropped my shiny personal entertainment device. Thankfully, my first reation was to catch it with my foot. Catch it cleanly, I did not, but I did manage to slow it’s accelleration towards earth to the point were it only dropped from a few inches. Whew! that was a close one! Thank you hours upon hours of mindless footbaggin’ :)

There! I posted something! Now I can finally get this blog monkey off my back and back into the cage where he belongs.

R-O-T-D: sick people!

Wednesday, March 16th, 2005

I haven’t written a rant in a while so here goes…

Why do sick people insist on coming in to work!? Seriously, if you’re feeling miserable, there’s no use coming in and exposing your coworkers to the miserableness. I think some people actually think that if they miss a day of work the company will never be able to recover. Go home, sleep, and come back when you can be productive and not affect the well-being of everyone else.

thanks for the tee’s X|ng

Sunday, March 13th, 2005

This weekend was a blast…there’s so much to post but i need to get some sleep.

Huge thanks to PedX|ing for the t-shirts. Those are brilliant…I’m wearing the /x01a4 one right now. :) Unfortunately, I didn’t decipher it on my own…and I’m depressed because of it, seriously. I think I would have figured it out eventually, but I’m accustomed to a different notation…0x…stupid me!

I took a few pics of the shirts that I’ll post. They’re fantastic…oh, and I explained the “chown” shirt to T…but I think it may take a few more explanations…the -R is especially confusing.

alright, off to sleep. Hope your family’s doing well pedxing.

As Tom Jones once said…

Thursday, March 10th, 2005

Just Help Yourself to my lips, to my arms, just say the word and they are yours! Well, here we are. Man, who’d a thought that I, “I” would be posting on blissjunkies…this is sooooo cool! I can die tomorrow and say that I’ve lived a successful life and that not all was for naught. How was that for a play on words!?! … Guys? …

stupid SPAM!

Thursday, March 10th, 2005

I turned comment moderation back on. I’ve received close to 40 trackback spams in the last 24 hours so I was forced to turn it back on. I know this is a PITA but I might have found a decent solution. If you guys want to create an account and log in, I can bump up your privileges so you can self-moderate your comments….

no BT tracker yet

Wednesday, March 9th, 2005

I didn’t have a chance to setup that BT tracker last night. I ended up driving up to the north side of st paul to see some friends and then I dropped by Sarah’s on the way home so I didn’t get home until late. I’ll get around to it tonight.

PedX|ing, if you’re desperate, you still have an account on flyhouse.homelinux.org so you could sftp. Files are in /home/media/music

BTW, your homedir is freakin’ 12GB! cxoffice/vmware are big….I’m deleting the 2G you have in the .Trash folder.

Today I was given the exciting task of finding an 800 vanity number for our company. Let me tell you, this is so much fun. ugh! Why in the world is this an IT task!? So I’m trying to find a number that is easy to remember and/or spells something like fiber, bright, FTTP, UHB. Any great ideas? this is insane…
