on a lighter note

September 30th, 2008 by perickson

I pooped yesterday and noticed while flushing that the toilet was blood red. It freaked me out!

<inner_monologue>
“Do I have an ulcer or something?”
“It’s not like I’m feeling any pain or ever get too stressed out…”
“But what else could it be (thinking the worst)? I’ve NEVER had something like this happen to me!”
….a few hours of deliberation…
“Wait, didn’t I drink a 32oz fruit-punch+berry gatorade today?”
“Yep, that’ll do it. Whew!”

wow palin is an idiot

September 30th, 2008 by perickson

I haven’t posted for a really long time, but man, this video pushed me over the top.

“i’ve been hearin’ about his Senate speeches since i was in…like…second grade!”. uuuuuugggggghhhh!

I cannot imagine how anyone in their right mind could support this woman and I’m saddened to have so many friends/family who _really_ like her. For example, when speaking to my parents I hear my mom in the background saying: “Ask him if he’s as excited about Sarah as we are!?” My response? “Uhm…yeah…not so much”.

On a related note, here are some of the wonderful comments I’ve heard from my republican friends/family.

CR (close relative): “I just don’t trust Obama. I think he’ll sell us out to the easterners.”
Me: “The easterners? What does that mean?”
CR: “The middle easterners…the Arabs. I think he’ll cave to their demands.”

UFMF/FSD (uneducated farm mom/friend South Dakota):
Me: “What don’t you like about Obama?”
UFMF/FSD: “Well for one, his name…(whisper) ‘Hussein’”
Me: “Oh C’mon! Really?”
UFMF/FSD: “Well, I’m just sayin’”

URWCF (ultra-right-wing conservative friend): “I’m glad McCain suspended his campaigning to solve the financial crisis.”
Me: “Really? Do you actually think he had anything to do with solving the problem?”
URWCF: “Well at least he was THERE bringing people together!”
Me: “Yeah but do you think he played any role in the solution? It was a total political play.”
URWCF: Digresses about how for once a senator was “doing his job” and started berating Hillary for campaigning, then taking a month long vacation.
Me: /me agrees that our system of campaigning for like 2 years in advance is ridiculous, but still doesn’t McCain had anything to do with “solving” the credit crisis.

I could go on and on. Honestly, I’m at the point where I wouldn’t mind seeing the economy (and our nation) in utter shambles. I’ve worked very hard in life to get to where I’m at now (wife that I love, a modest home, fantastic job, some expendable income), but I’m pretty confident that I could survive and be content with a whole lot less. Maybe it’s time for the system to reboot.

UPDATE: ok i couldn’t resist:

“I think God’s will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gasline built. So pray for that.” (REALLY? You want me to pray to the omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient God of the universe for him to build a natural gas pipeline!? Really? Are you kidding me!?)

Gmap Pedometer and MapMyRun…neat tools

July 16th, 2008 by perickson

I spent some time playing around with Gmap Pedometer and MapMyRun (both Google Map mashups). The two sites really work well in tandem. Gmap pedometer allows me to export to GPX format and MapMyRun allows me to import maps from Pedometer as well as track it as part of a workout routine! Since I’m horrible at keeping track of things I’m going to bookmark and tag my runs with del.icio.us :)

Oh and MapMyrun has nice copy/paste embed code :)

running

July 11th, 2008 by perickson

Marianne convinced me to sign up for the Twin Cities 10 mile run in October. It was obviously a moment of weakness for me. Thankfully it’s a lottery system so we’re not guaranteed entry.

Since I haven’t run in like a year I went out the last two nights. The first night wasn’t too bad (though I’m obviously not in running shape). I ran for 30 minutes and realized the hills were no fun. Last night I thought I’d see how my body could handle 2 nights in a row. Wow, it was terrible! My muscles were tight and my knee was just shot. I ran for like 15 minutes and had to quit. So as of know it looks like I’ll be able to successfully complete about 25% of the 10 miles. lol…for once I’m hoping NOT to win the lottery :)

canoeing the mississippi river

June 26th, 2008 by perickson

My buddy Adam is headed off for 6 months of national guard training in about 10 days so he asked if I wanted to meet up for a canoeing adventure tonight. We drove up to Blaine and stopped at a guys house who rents canoes. He drove us upriver and dropped us off. He asked how far north we wanted to go and we said “as far north as you want to take us”. Little did we know, this guy actually took us seriously! We ended up paddling for about 3.5 hours (until it was dark) but thankfully were able to spot the guys house in the darkness. Then we went back to my place and grilled up some food (at 11pm) :)

Canoeing was awesome (especially the giant dam that came up unexpectedly). There are some seriously amazing homes on the river and it was great to spend some time out enjoying the sun. It’s definitely something I’ll have to do again sometime!

2 days, (almost) 150 miles

June 10th, 2008 by perickson

I headed up to Blaine on Friday to hop a bus up to Duluth (more specifically, Proctor) for the MS 150 bike ride. We arrived in Proctor around 7pm and unloaded. I headed for the football field to setup my tent while the rest of the group claimed their space on the floor of the Proctor High School gymnasium. We chowed down some delicious spaghetti, headed into town for a couple of hours, then retired for the evening to our sleeping quarters.

Breathing in the cool, clean air made sleep come easily and I awoke at 5:30 am to the sound of people getting geared up to start the big ride. Normally, I wouldn’t be too happy waking up at this ungodly hour, but, today, it just felt right. I packed up all my gear, loaded it onto the truck, and met up with Team Chafe to begin our ride. We got started a little later than planned but there was no rush.

The beginning of the ride was interesting. The adrenaline was flowing and it was hard to resist the urge to kick’er down. Jon had just gotten a new road bike and was pretty impressed with it, so we took off pretty fast for the first few miles. About 6 miles in we crossed a beautiful bridge with rapids underneath and stopped to take in the view.

rapids

Eventually, we made it to the first stop and took a long break (waiting for a team members tire to be trued). We finally got back on the trail and made it to the next stop. By the time we started the third leg, I was getting a little bored. I decided to take off on my own and fight the wind. BAD IDEA. Biking into the wind by myself took a TON of energy and I felt pretty exhausted. When my pace started to slow, I was lucky enough to have a group of 4 riders pass me. I fell into their draft and got a much needed break. After drafting for several miles, I volunteered to pull for a bit. The leader said they were at 18mph so I started pulling at that. The wind was really tough but I kept pulling hard. Finally, I couldn’t pedal any longer and said I needed a break. After about 2 miles, I looked back and there were just two of us…whoops! We waited for them to catch up and found ourselves at the next stopping point.

I waited for the rest of the team to show up and headed out again. Having experienced a team that rode so well together, I tried to convince my team to do the same. For the next 12 miles, 3 of us rotated and we kept up a pretty decent (but not great) pace. We made it through the next couple of stops with engegy to spare. At the last stop before the finish I was getting ancy. I asked Jon if he wanted to burn the last leg to the finish and he was up for it. The two of us took off like a machine. We pushed 21-22mph while constantly screaming “on your left!”. It was a BLAST! My legs burned the entire time but it was totally worth it. We pulled into Hinckley feeling fantastic.

The rest of the crew arrived about 30 minutes later so we cheered them to the finish. We all relaxed for a bit, then I hopped a bus to the school to pick up my gear and grab a shower. I got back to the Casino grounds and setup my tent while the rest of the team headed to the hotel (someone had 2 extra hotel rooms so they didn’t have to sleep in the gym). I crawled into my tent and woke up two hours later to voices outside. Wow, that was a power nap and a half. Then we chowed down some Famous Dave’s food, watched part of the awards ceremony, and crashed for the night. The weather was absolutely perfect, and, once again, I slept like a baby.

Sunday morning I woke up early (5am this time) and got ready for the day. The team showed up around 6:45 and we hit the road around 7. The bike seat was _incredibly_ uncomfortable for the first mile or so, but eventually went numb. I followed a team from BBY/Geek Squad for the first leg averaging about 19mph. We arrived at the first rest stop in no time flat. I met up with some of the faster guys from the team and decided to ditch the rest of the group and ride with them. The 5 of us rode as a team (albeit a vagabond crew) but totally kicked butt. We rode the next 3 legs at an awesome pace (~20mph…sometimes 25 :) ). We made it to the last stop and parted ways. Jon and I waited for about an hour for the rest of the crew to show up. The final 9 miles was a piece of cake and we arrived in Blaine to a large crowd of people chearing us on. I saw Mare waiting at the finish line and gave her a high 5 before crossing the line.

I can’t tell you how much fun the experience was. I will _definitely_ be riding next year and will be recruiting others to come with. Team Chafe was an awesome group of people to spend time with. I’m also amazed at how well organized the entire event was. I can’t imagine a better setup for a long distance (long for me at least) race. Everything was flawless.

For me the absolute highlight was riding with our group of 5 on the last day. We clicked off miles in amazing time and being a bunch of screwballs passing teams with matching jersey’s and fancy gear made me fell so good inside :) I can’t wait to do it all again next year!

Here are the photos that I took

death cab @ the orpheum

June 3rd, 2008 by perickson

Mare and I went to the Death Cab for Cutie show at the Orpheum tonight. I’d never been to that venue and was pretty excited about the show. I was really impressed with the Orpheum. It was a beautiful building and I’d love to catch a play there sometime (hopefully in the balcony). We had pretty good seats (due to the fact that I just happened to be checking out DCFC’s website the morning ticketscammer started selling tickets). The show was a lot of fun but there were a couple of things that bothered me.

First, the sound guys seemed to have a hard time dialing in the right volumes. Secondly, we were sitting near the wall, in direct line with the speakers and the bass was WAY too loud. The sound echoed off the walls and all that seemed to be left was the pounding baseline (mostly drums). I was disappointed because one of the reasons I love DCFC so much is the melodic subtleties and controlled chaos of their music. Most of that was lost :(

It was still a great show though! The highlight of the evening was the first song. The room was buzzing with energy and, as the music started, people were squirming in their seats wondering who would be the first brave soul to stand up. The conclusion of the song, and subsequent clapping was finally enough to push people over the edge (or rather, to their feet).

Another thing that really surprised me was the variation of the audience. I was expecting nothing but hipster kids with their “i don’t care how I look but spent $80 on these tight pants and $40 hair-in-face haircut”. Surprisingly, there were quite a few older people, and LOTS of underage kids. It was refreshing to see lot of different people enjoying the same good music. All in all, it was a really fun night!

hoping I don’t get strep

May 24th, 2008 by perickson

Mare wasn’t feeling well on thursday and came home from work a bit early. She had been shivering and freezing all day so we figured she had a fever. She took it once and the thermometer said 102.67! I thought it HAD to be a fluke so I tried…98.7. Her ear was bothering her too so she went into the clinic that night. They said she had an ear infection (and maybe a cold coming on) and gave her some antibiotic+steroid drops. Friday night, her throat started to hurt. This morning she woke me up and said she had white spots in her throat. Uh oh. I looked and it was pretty nasty so we went to the clinic at Target to get a strep test done.

It was kinda funny. The secretary/assistant took the swab and waited for the doctor to come in. They said they’d do a rapid test and send it to the lab if it came back negative. The doctor started the test and set a timer for 6 minutes (for the test to complete). One minute later, he said “well, you’re already positive” and threw away the test. Shortly after the assistant came out of exam room with a spray bottle and started spraying down the check-in counter. It may have just been a coincidence but it totally cracked me up. We picked up some penicillin and headed on our way.

I’m _really_ hoping to avoid catching it. I know I’ve been exposed but hopefully my superior immune system will come out the victor. lol.

It’s been a busy weekend. I helped some good friends move into their new (and super nice) house on Friday night. This afternoon I went out on a sweet 2 hour ride. The weather was perfect and I made it to the end of the Gateway Trail (33 miles round trip). The last 1.5 miles was rough. I always seem to be heading uphill and into the wind when I’m the most tired. Near the end, I was riding on a somewhat busy street hugging the white line near the gutter. Most vehicles were cool and either used the left lane or at least scooted left a few feet to pass me. However, some jackass redneck in a huge pickup decided to buzz me (at what must have been 50 mph (in a 30mph zone)) and came within INCHES of hitting me. I was so pissed! I mean it’s one thing to not move over but it’s another thing entirely to purposely try to intimidate me off the road. It’s idiots like this that make we want to be a jerk and command the entire lane (as is my right since in MN a bike has the exact same rights as a car…except for riding on the freeways). I swear, EVERY single time I have an issue with a motor vehicle it’s some guy in a truck. I’m 99% sure big truck owners are trying to compensate for something else that’s tiny. My only comfort is that they’re paying at least $100 to fill their tanks. :)

Epic Fail…Going green (lawnmower)

May 23rd, 2008 by perickson

Growing up, I spent a _lot_ of time mowing lawns. It turns out that adults seem to dread mowing their lawns and, as a kid, mowing was a great way to make some cash during “baseball season”, aka summer. I started mowing my neighbor Dorothy’s (my “3rd Grandma) yard when I was about 11 years old and continued mowing several lawns until I left for college. I loved the smell of fresh cut grass and dirty 2-stroke engines.

Since I’m now a homeowner and it’s springtime, I have the privilege of having a lawn to mow again! As winter began to fade, I became excited about purchasing my first ever lawnmower. With gas prices ever on the rise, I thought it would be cool to buy one of those human-powered reel mowers. I read some positive reviews online and decided to buy a 20″ Scotts model. The local True Value store (which is 100% cooler than Home Depot, btw) had one in stock and I decided to buy it. The TrueValue guy said “they work ok” and I was super excited about a pollution-less, quiet, and simple mower.

Epic FAIL!

My first attempt at mowing was saddening to say the least. The “green” mower didn’t like my uneven lawn and completely failed to cut any grass over a few inches tall. My neighbor chuckled at me but was nice enough not to say too much. While I was mowing the front yard, the mailman came by and said “I haven’t seen one of those since the 60’s”! That’s Minnesota nice for “you’re an idiot, man”!

So…yeah…Last weekend I went and bought myself a _real_ (not reel) mower. I thought about buying an electric, but after the previous debacle, I decided that a nice cut lawn was more important than burning gas and spitting out some CO2. Take THAT future generations!

So there you have it. I’m now a happy polluter with a nice lawn. To compensate, I’ve decided to buy a battery-powered trimmer. Does that count as a carbon offset?

spring biking

May 20th, 2008 by perickson

So I got an email yesterday informing me that I have 18 days until the MS 150 bike race. The MS 150 is a 2 day, 150 mile ride from Duluth MN to the Twin Cities. A couple of people on our kickball team did it last year so, in a moment of insanity, I agreed to give it a go as well. I’m excited for the challenge but _really_ pissed at myself for not managing my schedule properly. I signed up for the race then months later realized (thanks to Marianne and Aaron) that it coincided with our yearly hiking trip! I’m soooo bummed that I can’t go on the hiking trip. That has been the highlight of my summer (well other than getting engaged I guess) for the past 2 years and I’m gonna miss it so incredibly much.

Anyway, since I only have less than 3 weeks to get my lazy butt into shape I decided to do some riding this week. I really don’t know the trails out on the east side of St Paul so it’s been a fun exploratory experience. On Saturday, I headed over to Lake Elmo Reserve. My neighbor works there part time so I thought I’d check it out. The ride east was fun. The wind was at my back and it was downhill most of the way. At one point I hit 39mph going down a hill and had a blast. The park was pretty cool and I enjoyed buzzing by the ranger station without a permit. The weather looked ominous so I decided to start the trek home. Traveling home…not so fun. The 39mph hill was daunting on the way up with a strong headwind. Once I conquered that obstacle, the wind picked up and I felt like I was being sandblasted on several occasions! I finally made it home, wondering to myself how I could do 75 miles in day when I was so tired after just 17.

Tonight I went out for another ride. This time I decided to head south on McKnight to find the Battle Creek Trail. The Battle Creek trail was pretty sweet. It was very beautiful, except for the gnats in the mouth :) The trail was windy, downhill, and there were a few families around so I was constantly breaking. I eventually met up with Warner Road and continued into downtown St Paul. For nostalgia I decided to ride back through downtown and go by the old MindTouch office (singe tear streams down my face). Instead of heading back on the trail I decided to do some city biking and headed up East 7th. Climbing back out of the river valley was a LOT of work. Thankfully the road wasn’t too busy and it was fun to explore a new area. I eventually made it home and enjoyed the endorphin rush of working my butt off for an hour. Now I just need to stick to my routine and get at least 3-4 rides in a week.

Finding motivation to bike has been really hard lately, but I’m _always_ satisfied when I’m done. There’s just something so gratifying about traveling a large distance on only human power. I just hope I feel the same way after 2 75 mile days :)

P.S. I need to raise $300 for the MS 150 race so if anyone wants to give me money, I’ll take it! But seriously, I probably wouldn’t give you money so I’m not getting my hopes up ;)
